Around Re-Norm
Erin Allweiss' life in Paris moves between work, family and the people she brings together. After 15 years in New York, the co-founder of creative consultancy No. 29 moved to the French capital with her husband, young son and rescue dog, opening a new chapter in a city she had traveled to for years.
Tell us more about your work and what inspires it
I am drawn to artists, makers, and brands that inspire people to see the world differently. They question how things are done and use their craft to show that what has been handed to us does not have to be the final answer.
Our work moves across fashion, art, design and culture. What interests me is not staying in one area but connecting people from different worlds who share the same values. I have always been interested in storytelling and the different forms it can take. Fashion can tell a story, art can tell a story, and bringing people together physically can do that too.
That feels especially important when so much of life happens online. For a recent gathering with Muuto in our Paris apartment, we invited friends, collaborators, and creative voices from different fields to meet and exchange perspectives. We wanted everyone to know who else was in the room and for the conversation to move beyond small talk. A thoughtful question can give one person permission to share, which then opens the door for someone else.
“We connect with a story, a person, or a culture we did not understand, and that changes us.”
How has moving to Paris changed the way you live?
Paris and New York move at very different speeds. New York has an energy and vibration that I love, while Paris gives me more room to think and focus on creative work. The day starts a little later here, and there is still a sense that you can sit down, have a coffee, and take your time.
That slower rhythm connects to many of the values behind our work—craft, care, and making things thoughtfully. It also feels connected to my New Orleans upbringing. The city is Southern, but deeply shaped by French culture, so moving to Paris has felt like a natural continuation of something familiar.
Moving also gave us the chance to begin again. We arrived with our suitcases and very little else, so we could be intentional about what we brought into the apartment.
How did you make the apartment feel like home?
Because we arrived with so little, it felt like a genuine fresh start. After living in a small New York apartment, I had become very aware of how closely space is connected to wellbeing and the way you move through everyday life.
We tried to be thoughtful about everything that entered the apartment. Do we need it? Do we love it? Will we want to live with it for a long time? The green Connect Soft Sofa was one of those pieces. I was drawn to its shape, color, and flexibility, but also to how comfortable it is. It gives the room warmth without making it feel too formal.
Color became a way of bringing personality into the white interior. The green sofa, the blue Re-norm Table, and the artworks make the apartment feel more like us. Some pieces also carry personal meaning, including a watercolor painted by my godmother.
“Space is so connected to mental health and wellbeing—to how you want to live in it, exist in it and move through it.”
How does the Re-Norm Table shape your daily life?
In New York, the kitchen table had to be everything at once, including my desk. Here, the Re-Norm Table gives work its own place, which has changed the rhythm of the apartment. I can sit down and focus, then clear the surface and let it become something else.
My son uses it to play, and it holds the objects and artworks I like to keep close. We also used it during our dinner at home with Muuto. The table held food and drinks and helped the room feel more open to more people.
I grew up with a strong sense of Southern hospitality, where there is always room for one more person. I like that the table carries that same openness. It has a strong presence without telling you how to use it, and it moves easily between work, family life, and time with others.
What drew you to the Connect Soft Sofa?
I was first drawn to its shape and the way it can shift between different configurations. The green also felt right for the apartment. Against the white walls and pale wood, it brings in color without taking over the room. What surprised me most was how comfortable it is. It is the first sofa I have owned that feels truly comfortable, and I did not realize what I had been missing until I sat down. It has become a place where we can properly settle in, whether we are spending time together as a family or simply slowing down at home.
“I use it for work and as a play table, but it is also its own design object. It stands out because of the color, and there are so many uses for it.”
