Visitors explored the myriad of ideas, materials, and methods tried and tested to arrive at the final form—the design object we know and love.

In this inspiring setting, we also announced the Muuto Design Contest, an open-call competition seeking innovative ideas for small furniture and accessories.

This initiative aimed to discover new perspectives that elevate everyday objects and challenge traditional design notions, reflecting Muuto's commitment to promoting forward-thinking talents in the industry.

Honest Expression - Cecilie Manz - Workshop Chair

Muuto is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition characterized by enduring aesthetics, functionality and an honest expression. Our designs are understated yet distinctive, pared back to reveal something essential and all about the considered detail. Wood as a material is integral to that story, and the continuation of it. Enabling countless forms to come to life, it is soft, friendly and versatile—intrinsically tied to the history and values of Scandinavian design.

“Design processes can be chaotic. The path to the moment of clarity—namely the final product—often leads through a forest of doubt and disorder. Among growing piles of model foam, dust, cardboard, wood, and coffee you find a surprisingly creative place. Producing a needle sometimes takes a haystack, as with Workshop Chair.” – Cecilie Manz

New Perspectives - Jamie Wolfond - Set Lamp

We strive to build on this heritage with forward-looking materials, technology, and bold creative thinking. Our ambition is to introduce new perspectives on Scandinavian design, which is why we look to voices in our local community and internationally. We handpick leading contemporary designers who are strong interpreters of our philosophy and combine their talents with the passionate Muuto creative team. Our designs are unmistakable because they have muutos: objects made sublime through new perspectives.

“A common misconception is that making something new requires new materials, technologies, or production processes. In fact, the most interesting ideas come from looking a bit differently at something very familiar. An example of that principle is the Set Lamp, which reimagines the screw thread as a tool for modulation.” – Jamie Wolfond

Color - Margrethe Odgaard - Ply Rug

Color is key to Muuto. We believe that color influences our emotions and how we perceive the spaces that we inhabit. Though our way of seeing color differs person to person, the influence of color on our everyday lives is obvious: it has the potential to affect how we feel, making us relaxed, energized, or focused. We experience color in relation to the elements around it—the shape on which it appears, the texture onto which it is applied, and the space and atmosphere that we experience the color in.

“Ply Rug is a simple, but elegant design with a broken twill structure that enhances the vibrant and almost three-dimensional pattern of the design. Spending a lot of time choosing the right color combinations for it, I hope it makes a strong statement, affecting people not only aesthetically, but also emotionally.” – Margrethe Odgaard

Inspired by our values and designs? We invite you to be a part of our journey. Submit your proposal today at www.muuto.com/design-contest. This is your opportunity to showcase your creativity.
