By combining the ideals of Scandinavian craftsmanship with a modern design language, the Cover Lounge Chair has a simple yet refined expression. Join us for a visit to Thomas Bentzen’s studio to learn more about how he translated an existing design into a lounge chair.

“The Cover Lounge Chair came as a natural extension of the original design and was part of an idea that I had for some time”, says designer Thomas Bentzen, standing in his Copenhagen studio.

Complemented by its unique details, the Cover Lounge Chair features a grand and embracing seat while taking up little space in the room. On the unique expression of the design, Bentzen adds: “The expression of the Cover Lounge Chair is inspired by the original Cover Chair—it was important for me to retain the chair’s light and open expression to illustrate the kinship with its chair counterpart.”

Speaking on the design process of the Cover Lounge Chair, Bentzen notes: “Since my starting point was based on an existing design, the design process was different than usual—the expression and the materials were already given yet it is still a remarkably different design. Translating the ideas of the chair into a lounge chair was more challenging than I expected. Various small details have been twisted to make it bring in features of solidity and robustness, paired with a light and modern touch.”

Turning to his own design philosophy and his relation to the Cover Lounge Chair, Bentzen explains: “The chair is a product of my previous work and designs—there is a clear red thread to my other projects with Muuto, modernizing the use of veneer in combination with solid wood.”

When asked about how new perspectives played into the ideation of the Cover Lounge Chair, Bentzen ends: “The openness of the chair, combined with the materials in the meeting of solid wood and thin veneer, adds a new perspective to the typology of a lounge chair. Its open and light silhouette allows for it to be placed in living rooms and hallways as well as in large, open spaces."
