“My work is driven by a desire to create meaningful design,” says designer Thomas Bentzen, standing in his Copenhagen studio, surrounded by models, sketches and fragments of furniture. Taking a humanist approach to design, there's a curious yet simple feel to his work. Touching on his process, he notes: “The design is never complete—there’ll always be aspects that you want to change but there comes a time where you simply have to let go.”
With Loft, Bentzen wanted to marry the archetypical forms of Scandinavian design with an industrial approach. This led to the chair featuring a play of complementing contrasts where the soft wood seat and back is placed atop a base in sturdy steel.
Looking towards his past work for Muuto, Bentzen says: “To me, the most vital thing is to make good design that is rooted in simplicity, functionality, rationality and comfort—it is in these elements that the Loft Chair found its starting point.”
