Muuto Design Contest insights from the muuto internal jury

We interviewed Julie Lykke Myhrvold, Head of Design, and Line Brockmann Juhl, our Chief Marketing Officer at Muuto, about our design contest. Together, they discuss the inspiration behind the contest, how it aligns with Muuto’s philosophy, the types of designs we seek, and the importance of encouraging new talent.

What inspired the creation of the Muuto Design Contest?

Julie: The idea for the Muuto Design Contest was born during a meeting focused on accessories. Our team frequently explores young talents in the accessory category, scouting for fresh ideas in colors, materials, shapes, and functions. Many of our accessories, like the Kink Vase, originated from these explorations. We wanted to formalize this process and showcase our commitment to new talent and innovation in the industry.

Line: Muuto means 'new perspectives' which drives us to continually seek new ideas, making it inspiring to collaborate with creative minds from across the globe. Established in 2006, Muuto has grown into one of the established players in design. With this platform, we are passionate about uplifting and showcasing emerging talent.

How does this contest align with Muuto's overall mission and design philosophy?

Julie: It aligns perfectly with our mission of discovering new tendencies in the industry, not just trends. We continually research and keep our eyes open for what's happening around us. This contest emphasizes our focus on innovative and exploratory design, particularly in accessories, where there's more room for experimentation.

What type of designs are you specifically looking for in the contest?

Julie: We’re looking for designs that are sculptural yet functional, capable of fitting into different settings like hallways, tablescapes, or offices. The accessories should not be hidden away; they should be beautiful objects on their own. They need to strike a balance between function and aesthetic expression, like a vase that is also a sculpture or a tray that serves and looks stunning on a table. Additionally, in order for us to consider production, the designs need to fit into the current Muuto assortment. They should complement our existing products and enhance the overall collection without feeling out of place.

Line: At Muuto, we focus on creating comprehensive environments rather than individual products. Accessories play a pivotal role as they complete any space by adding essential elements of form, texture, and color. They are integral to our strategy of designing cohesive living and dining areas.

What criteria will the judges focus on when evaluating submissions?

Julie Lykke Myhrvold: We’re looking for new perspectives in design, innovative use cases, materials, and craftsmanship. The story behind the design is crucial. Even if a product isn’t completely finished, a clear intention and a compelling story can make it stand out. We want to see designs that communicate a need or purpose and add something new to the market.

Line Brockmann Juhl: Our panel will look for designs that resonate with the signature Muuto aesthetic—innovative yet reflective of our existing collections. Throughout our history, we've collaborated with numerous designers, each infusing their unique skills to embody Muuto's design ethos.

Can you share examples of past designs or designers that encapsulate the spirit of this contest?

Julie Lykke Myhrvold: The Kink Vase by Rachel Griffin and the Set Lamp by Jamie, both discovered at fairs, exemplify the spirit of this contest. These products have strong identities that couldn’t have been briefed but emerged from individual designers’ passion and creativity. They highlight the kind of innovation and distinctiveness we seek.

Line Brockmann Juhl: A prime example would be the iconic Dot coat hooks, which exemplify simplicity, honest craftsmanship, and longevity. These elements encourage playful configurations and are a testament to the enduring nature of Scandinavian design.

Why is it important for Muuto to support new talents?

Julie: Supporting new talent is vital because it allows designers who haven’t had much exposure to showcase their work on a level playing field. This contest focuses solely on one design proposal, not the entire portfolio, making it accessible for newcomers. It aligns with Muuto’s strategy and history of valuing new perspectives from emerging designers.

How do you see the Muuto Design Contest influencing the broader design community and Scandinavian design?

Julie: Competitions like this push the industry forward, fostering daring and open exploration. They create a ripple effect, encouraging innovation and providing energy not only to Muuto but to the entire design community. Such contests help break conservative patterns and inspire new, bold ideas in Scandinavian design.

Line: In today’s fast-paced world, it's crucial to pause and immerse ourselves in inspiration, learning, and development. The Muuto Design Contest serves as a platform for this.
