      • Practical considerations

When choosing upholstery for your furniture, there are a few practical points you may want to consider: durability, exposure to sunlight, and pilling. To the right, you can read about these terms and what they mean for your choice of material.

      • Durability

Each material has a Martindale and Wyzenbeek score, which indicates its durability based on the number of abrasions it can withstand before showing wear. The higher the score, the more durable the material. A score of 30,000 is sufficient for most home environments, and Muuto’s upholstery materials range from 30,000 to 150,000.

      • Sunlight exposure

If your piece of furniture is exposed to direct sunlight, you may want to consider lightfastness when choosing an upholstery material. Measured on a scale from 1 to 8, lightfastness refers to the material’s ability to withstand visible discoloration due to exposure to direct sunlight. The higher the number, the longer it will take for the color of a textile to change. All of our materials offer a lightfastness of at least 3.

      • Pilling

Pilling is the formation of lint balls on a material as it sheds fibers. Measured on a scale of 1-5, a higher number means less pilling. However, pilling will decrease over time, and vacuuming your furniture with a dusting brush can help prevent it.

      Types of textiles

Natural and synthetic textiles are two distinct categories of textiles, each with its own set of characteristics, pros, and cons. The main difference between natural and synthetic fabrics is how they are made. Different natural and synthetic textiles have their own advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to consider your needs and pick the textile that best speaks to these.

      Natural textile

Natural textiles are made from natural fibers such as cotton or wool while synthetic fabrics are created in labs, transforming chemicals into fibers. Examples of natural textiles are cotton, wool, or linen, while polyester or nylon are common examples of synthetic textiles. When choosing between different textiles there are multiple factors to consider. Ultimately, the choice depends on your preferences, needs, and values. Some of the benefits of natural textiles include: Liveliness, Breathability, Durability, Renewable and/or naturally occuring.

      Synthetic textiles

Synthetic textiles have the advantage of being more affordable and durable, but do not have the same liveliness or heat regulating functionalities as natural textiles. Some of the benefits of synthetic textiles include: Versatility, Durability, Easy to maintain, Inexpensive, Flame-resistant

      textiles & foam

OEKO-TEX sets high safety standards for materials tested for harmful substances. That’s why we use OEKO-TEX foam for the majority of our upholstered furniture. What’s more, the majority of our textiles are sourced from the Danish textile manufacturer, Kvadrat which has received the EU Ecolabel. A certification synonymous with environmental excellence and promoting a circular economy, their criteria encompass the entire lifecycle of a product from raw material to disposal.

Is it possible to change the upholstery?

We do not recommend changing the upholstery of any upholstered Muuto products, but if needed we recommend having it changed by a professional.

      How to care for textiles

In case of stains, we generally recommend removing non-greasy stains by carefully dabbing with a lint-free cloth or sponge wrung out in clean warm water. If necessary, clean by dabbing with soapy water made with a little dish soap. Finally, dab the surface with clean water. Due to excess dye in jeans, dark jeans may leave stains on textiles; washing and cleaning may not always lead to satisfying results. Please do not rub the material hard as this could result in loss of color or potentially damage the nap.

How to maintain upholstery apperance over time

A piece of furniture can appear different depending on the upholstery -leather, linen, wool – all come with their own set of characteristics. To maintain an even firmness, we recommend using each seat evenly. Otherwise, uneven wear and tear can occur. Before using the product for the first time, the back and seat cushion must be plumped up and straightened out. Do this regularly to achieve the best comfort and appearance.
